At the Ethereum Devcon conference in Bogota, Daphne of a DAO called blu3dao ("a DAO focused on empowering women, non-binary people, and allies to learn, earn, and play in web3 towards financial freedom") accused a man of harassment, tweeting a photo she took of him with his face visible: https://twitter.com/daphachar/status/1579879538099879937
"Day 1 of @EFDevcon and a group of us women got harassed by a gross guy! What did the Ethereum Foundation team do? Smiled and chatted with him for 10 minutes and let him go on his way! I feel horribly unsafe at this event. 👎Take women seriously when they report harassment."
The photo contains three visible faces and does not make it clear who the alleged harasser is. Also there was no explanation as to what actually happened, just the tweet quoted above.
A couple days later the man, "the brown backpack guy", wrote a public account of what happened: https://twitter.com/bejzik8/status/1580627781410385920. His account states that he didn't harass anyone, the alleged victim never attempted to confront him, that he was stopped multiple times by security including getting his phone searched because Daphne accused him of following and taking photos of her female friends, and then the following night he got kicked out of a club.
A conferencegoer confirmed that Daphne had accused him of taking photos of her friends, and that the security guards had searched his phone and found nothing: https://twitter.com/minchi_p/status/1580909702342328321
Daphne responded a few days later with a statement: https://twitter.com/daphachar/status/1581492182438932487 The statement is titled "The dark side of the crypto community" and starts off with "Now that I have arrived home to physical safety". She claims that he repeatedly booed and gave them thumbs down them while they were getting their picture taken. She then told the staff who confronted him and gave him a warning. According to her, "Several of us felt very unsafe sharing the same environment with someone who refused to leave us alone after repeated pleas, and still felt uninhibited to continue to harass us." She claims after the incident "I never followed him, or came within 10 feet of him" and that she never accused him of taking pictures of them and that she wasn't present during the police search (in direct contradiction to the previous witness's testimony".
She concludes her statement with the following demands to the Ethereum Foundation:
"-An amendment to the Devcon code of conduct to institute a zero tolerance policy for harassment when multiple reports are received.
-On call safety and support team available onsite for anyone to report incidents.
-A public response from the Ethereum Foundation team detailing the incident, what they could have done better, and how they will improve to keep the entire community safe.
-A full-time professional hired by the Ethereum Foundation team to put appropriate policies and procedures and training to protect the safety of all in future events.
-Open source DEI training provided as a resource for the broader web3 community."
She concluded her statement with "The dark side of the crypto community runs rampant."
Blu3dao came out with a statement the day prior: https://twitter.com/blu3dao/status/1581366698917388288
Another user on Twitter named cami came out questioning blue3dao's finances: https://twitter.com/camiinthisthang/status/1580716130166927360
Another user investigated blu3dao's engineering to find "their most promising piece of software is a shell script designed to inflate the activity on your Github profile by spoofing commits."https://twitter.com/intrinsicrypto/status/1580691898402209792
Tweet from another woman who attended the conference (no connection to the incident): https://twitter.com/defigirlxoxo/status/1580992622398955521
I don't want to jump to conclusions since its basically hearsay at this point, but the current evidence is overwhelmingly in brown backpack guy's favor. Daphne's statement is very weak and tries so hard to look like a victim - not only of the "aggressor" but also of the crypto community as a whole, even titling her statement "The dark side of the crypto community". She goes as far as to make a list of demands to the Ethereum foundation to implement things such as diversity training. Add to that the questionability of the financial integrity and motivations of blu3dao, and this looks like another case of woke bigotry.
This is another example of sexism against men where the mere accusation of harassment by a woman is enough to punish him. In a sane world no one would make false accusations, but people like Amber Heard and Adria Richards unfortunately prove that we are not in a sane world, ruining it for the actual victims of real abuse.
Even if Daphne's story is correct, it was completely wrong of her to publicly post a picture with a bunch of guy's faces and claim that she was harassed by one of them without any explanation as to what happened. She had no desire to understand the other side or resolve the situation - she didn't even confront the man. She simply wanted to destroy this man's life and direct a social media mob at him, utilizing her privilege as a woman and "damsel in distress" syndrome.
All of her demands to the Ethereum Foundation are garbage. The problem is that there's no clear definition as to what constitutes harassment. For most people harassment would constitute something like being groped, but for special snowflakes like Daphne getting a boo might constitute as harassment and the feeling of being in physical danger.
The woke movement essentially seeks to abuse damsel in distress syndrome to sacrifice harmless innocent men like brown backpack guy in the name of minority advocacy. The sad thing is that if she wasn't so obviously a grifter, she might've gotten away with a false accusation and done enough to destroy his life. We can not continue to breach due process and allow damsel in distress syndrome to discriminate against men. False accusations must be met with punishment greater than the crime being accused.
It will be interesting to see where this investigation goes. The cameraman's testimony or that of another one of the "victims" would certainly be enlightening.
