From Elon Musk:

"Twitter was acquired by X Corp both to ensure freedom of speech and as an accelerant for X, the everything app. This is not simply a company renaming itself, but doing the same thing.

The Twitter name made sense when it was just 140 character messages going back and forth – like birds tweeting – but now you can post almost anything, including several hours of video.

In the months to come, we will add comprehensive communications and the ability to conduct your entire financial world. The Twitter name does not make sense in that context, so we must bid adieu to the bird."

At first I thought the rebrand was stupid, but it's since grown on me. As part of a grander plan for an everything app, a rebranding makes sense. Also the rebranding could help make this appeal more to people not already on Twitter, especially younger people. For example someone I know who's not on Twitter told me:

"[2:54 PM] the funny thing is

[2:54 PM] I think I will start using twitter after seeing the X logo

[2:54 PM] I did not think the blue bird was cool enough for me

[2:54 PM] I figured it out when I saw the X today lol"

I respect Elon's ambition here, and will be excited to see how it plays out.
